Questions about violin setup and servicing

The right service depends on the individual instrument. A description of the problem, its repair history and how it has been stored all help us assess whether it needs setup, repairs or acoustic optimisation.

How does violin setup differ from repair?

Setup focuses on adjustments and how the instrument’s components work together. Repairs address physical damage or faults. An inspection may point to one of these approaches or a combination of both.

Arrange a violin assessment

Diagnosing buzzing and unwanted vibrations in a violin

Buzzing is often more noticeable on lower notes, where the string vibrates with a greater amplitude. There are three main possible causes: 1. Contact between the string and fingerboard: an unsuitable fingerboard scoop or an uneven surface may allow the vibrating string to strike the fingerboard. 2. Vibrating components: unwanted contact or vibration in the violin’s parts and fittings can produce a buzz. 3. Tonal irregularities: a coarse or harsh string sound is sometimes mistaken for mechanical buzzing, even though its source may lie in the way the string vibrates, the bowing technique or the instrument’s tonal characteristics.

Request a specialist assessment of buzzing and vibrations

Can acoustic optimisation replace an instrument upgrade?

Acoustic optimisation aims to make better use of the violin you already have; the outcome depends on its condition and construction. If its capabilities no longer meet your needs, you can consider moving to a different violin.
